"Dal Silicio al Computer": a multimedia course on the Physics of semiconductor materials and on electronic devices

by Roberto Fieschi

INFM

"Dal Silicio al Computer" (CD-Rom PC/Mac), a project of the Italian National Institute for the Physics of Matter (INFM), is a multimedia course on the properties and several applications of semiconductors. It was partially financed by the Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca scientifica and realized by INFMEDIA S.r.l..

"Dal Silicio al Computer" is aimed at high schools and undergraduate students. The multimedia deals for instance with concepts which students typically have difficulties to accept, such as "quantum mechanical levels" "band theory of solids" and so forth. Nevertheless, no complex mathematics have been used. The authors have adapted the conceptual key points of the discipline to the level of undergraduate students.

Contents are organized in chapters, subchapters and pages

containing photos, graphics, tables, movies,

interactive simulations,

several exercises

and many other tools.

The first chapters deal with the physics concepts necessary to understand the applications of semiconductors, described in the following pages.
What a Logic Unit is, which the differences between a RAM and a ROM are, how data are represented inside a computer, are dealt with in the last Chapter.

"Dal Silicio al Computer " is available also on-line (http://maccw.sns.it/technet/). The on-line version was realized using the "Shockwave" technology.
