Computer Based Learning in the WWW (Distance Learning) becomes more and more important in teaching at the Universities.

The Multimedia features of the HTML and DHTML documents combine: texts, graphics, animations, virtual reality (VRML), and modules for MO calculations

We will report our UNIX server based "Structural Chemistry on the WWW" system recently developed and tested with our students in physical chemistry. The structure of molecules is of fundamental importance to understand the physico-chemical properties and behavior of chemical compounds.

The user can generate reliable 3D-structures by a JAVA-Interface and the visualisation uses the CHIME plugin in Netscape. The incorporated userfriendly navigation tools within the system (approx. 400 dynamically generated HTML pages) and the programmed interfaces for Hueckel, MOPAC and GAUSSIAN98 calculations on-line and visualization of the main results of the calculations are very stimulating for efficient use of the offered course.

Computerized examination and emails between student and teacher support an personal way of learning. The course supports structural thinking of molecular structures in combining geometrical, electronic and energetic features of structures and dynamics.

The course runs from the fundamentals of Quantum Chemistry up to useful applications and concepts; special attention is given to the incorporation of symmetry (atomic orbitals, chemical bond, molecular orbitals, chemical reactions, and spectroscopy). The material can be used world wide, LOGIN and PASSWORD garanties for individual use and feedback.
